I just bought a new computer. It may change my life. Part of the reason i've avoided livejournal was the slowness of my old computer. Now that that is no longer a major problem...

Just when I was feeling particularly bad about the new year, I get a check in the mail for a 451 dollar overpayment on medical supplies and find out that a parking ticket I received a month ago is not yet overdue (so is still only 40 bucks, as opposed to 80 bucks). I'm feeling better already!

My Year in Music
Here's a list of the albums, songs and shows that meant the most to me in 2007. I'm not claiming they were the BEST of 2007, as I readily admit that my taste is a bit off, and also wasn't able to stay on top of what came out this year with the dilligence that was deserved. Also, a lot of this music didn't come out in 2007; I was just listening to it a lot this last year. Oh well, who cares. It's my "blog." It's about "me." Here is what I was most excited about.

Albums

1. The Blow - Paper Television

2. Bodies of Water - Eyes Will Pop and Ears Will Bleed

3. Captain Ahab - After the Rain My Heart Still Dreams

4. Electrelane - No Shouts, No Calls

5. The Finches - Human Like a House

6. Girl Talk - Night Ripper

7. Lavender Diamond - Imagine Our Love

8. The Long Blondes - Someone to Drive you Home

9. Marnie Stern - In Advance of the Broken Arm

10. Man Man - Six Demon Bag

11. The New Pornographers - Challengers

12. Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?

13. Roxy Music - Country Life

Songs

1. Doobie Brothers - What a Fool Believes. I fully embraced the Yacht Rockness of 2007.

2. Rihanna - Umbrella. Everybody's favorite song, but did you spend countless hours at work looking up covers of it on youtube? I didn't think so.

3. Japancakes - Only Shallow (My Bloody Valentine Cover). So much better than you would imagine it to be.

4. Judee Sill - Jesus Was a Cross Maker

5. Justice - D.A.N.C.E. Guarantied to put me in a good mood, even when I'm sulking in the corner at a party.

6. Daft Punk - One More Time. Great song to sing out loud while on the plane.

7. Kate Bush - Everything I could find... Weekends and weekends on youtube lost to KB.

8. Lavender Diamond - Oh No. Streaming late at night the first week of June working on that stupid summary judgment motion.

9. The Long Blondes - Once and Never Again. It's about how you only have to be 19 once and never again. And how you don't need a boyfriend.

10. My Barbarian - Tropical Vacation. My lo-fi anthem to how burnt out I am.

11. The Owls - Peppermint Patty

12. P.P. Arnold - THe First Cut is the Deepest. I always knew I liked this song. After hearing this version, I knew that i LOOOOOVED it.

13. Paris Hilton Motherfuckers - Party in 4D. "Space is the place, it's the new Newport Beach!" Shame they broke up this year.

14. Pet Shop Boys - What Have I Done to Deserve This?

15. Evanescence - Bring Me to Life. My new favorite karaoke song. And the rest of the bar's least favorite karaoke song.

16. Peter Bjorn & John - Young Folks. I know, it came out in 2006, but it was playing CONSTANTLY during the first few months of 2007, and it took me a long time to get sick of it.

17. Pulsallama - The Devil Lives in My Husband's Body. MUST SEE VIDEO.

18. Queen - Don't Stop Me Now. Why can't my office put together a performance like this?

19. Roxy Music - Psalm. Coolest dude ever.

20. Sally Shapiro - Anorak Christmas

21. Scout Niblett (featuring Bonnie Prince Billy) - Kiss. Favorite song of the year. No question about it. Cuz I'm a cheeseball.

22. Tegan and Sara - Walking With a Ghost

23. Vampire Weekend - I Stand Corrected

24. Xiu Xiu - Hello From Eau Claire

25. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Gold Lion

Shows

I went to kind a lot of shows this year. I'd estimate something in the range of 50-60? It's hard for me to sift through all of them right now. This is the best I can do.

1. Coral Sea at Pehrspace

2. Jonathan Richman at Safari Sam's

3. The Spires as the Velvet Underground at the Echo. April Fools Day. Bizarre evening, even for a Sunday.

4. Bjork at Coachella. Possibly the best performance by anybody I've seen ever.

5. New Pornographers at Coachella. After spending about 20 minutes furiously dancing, I turned around to find about 5 people lying on a blanket laughing at me.

6. New Pornographers at the Henry Fonda.

7. Daft Punk at Vegoose. I kept turning to my companions and saying "THIS IS SO GOOD. WHY CAN'T LIFE ALWAYS BE LIKE THIS?"

8. Girl Talk at the Echo. Covered in other people's sweat.

9. Yeah Yeah Yeahs at the Mayan. Long day at work followed by being crushed by a crowd of teenagers.

10. Morrissy at the Palladium. He played the old stuff that I never expected him to play.

11. Police at Dodger Stadium. Terrible seats. Got there late. Only a "very good" performance. But I've liked the Police since I was 1 year old. I was thrilled to be there.

12. Electrelane at the Troubadour.

13. The Long Blondes at the Echo.

14. Bodies of Water at the Eagle Rock Music Festival.

15. Marnie Stern at the Echo.

16. Collectively the Let's Independent Shows at Boardners. No particular show sticks out in my head, but it's one of the few events I can count on in LA to always make me feel good. I look forward to more in 2008.

There's More to Life Than Books, You Know (But Not Much More)
Remember me, friends?

How could you have forgotten! I know you no longer need me anymore the way you once did, but maybe you're happy just to see my name pop up once again on your friends list (those of you who still read livejournal at all!?) See below the list of books I read in 2007. Perhaps not so useful to you, but very much so for me, as I still haven't entirely given up on my fascination with the details of my not-so-exciting life. In no particular order:

1. Sam Harris - Letter to a Christian Nation. Short? Yes. To the point? Yes. Offers worn defenses of atheism that I can't help but agree with? Yes. Entirely lacking in subtley and intellectually dishonest? Oh yeah, that too.

2. Sam Harris - The End of Faith: Religion, Terror and the Future of Reason. Much better than Letter to a Christian Nation. Makes stronger arguments in support of atheism. I enjoyed it more, and very much respect Mr. Harris, but I wish he'd give theists a bit more credit before knocking down their beliefs.

3. Richard Carrier - Sense & Goodness Without God: A Defense of Metaphysical Naturalism. As I'm sure you can tell from the title, total crap. A shame that I rather like the person who recommended it to me.

4. Martin Amis - London Fields. A bit long, but very clever, and made me feel oh-so-very sophisticated when I read it in front of other people. I recommend it if you have the time, enjoy Amis (I do!), and don't mind a book that leaves one with a general feeling of disgust towards your fellow humans, but leaves one with no "point" with which to walk away and describe the book to strangers at bars. Thanks for the suggestion, [info]ladynoblebarnes.

5. Martin Amis - Time's Arrow
. Loved it! Highly, highly recommended. I'd say "Great for a _______ book," if filling in that blank wouldn't ruin the ending. Again, thanks for the suggestion [info]ladynoblebarnes.

6. Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner - Freakonomics. The only fact I learned from this book that I can consistently recall is that the reason the name "Madison" is so popular among girls in their teens and early 20s is that it was the name of the protagonist in the movie "Splash." I enjoyed this book a lot. If you haven't read it, it is a ton of fun.

7. Haruki Murakami - Dance Dance Dance. Book about a lonely Japanese guy who ends up on adventures in remote areas of Japan, loves American and British pop culture and interacts with the other characters in dreams? Sign me up!

8. Haruki Murakami - A Wild Sheep Chase. Ditto! (After all, aren't all Murakami books more or less about the EXACT SAME THING FOR 500+ PAGES (hint from Jed - JUST READ THE WIND UP BIRD CHRONICLE; it is brilliant, and you'll get everything you need from Murakami in those short 700 or so pages!)).

9. Ian McEwan - On Chesil Beach. I was told recently that I "mess things up" and that when i do so, it is "my fault." That's exactly what this book is about. Read it. I consider it more of a "novella" than a true "novel" in that it is mostly about one evening of interaction between two characters and the backstory leading up to that interaction. But hey, I cried within 200 pages! Not bad!

10. Ian McEwan - Saturday. Great book that makes you appreciate your family, (mostly) without dipping into cheesiness. I was very impressed by my Mom that she felt the ending was just a bit too neat and pretty.

11. Philip Roth - American Pastoral. The ugly side of the radical left! Maybe a bit too sentimental, but I liked it.

12. Philip Roth - Portnoy's Complaint.

13. Marilynne Robinson - Housekeeping. If you find Virginia Woolf a bit too action packed, this book is FOR YOU, It was brilliantly written, and I liked it, but I can't help but associate it with starting it at a diner on the Sunday morning that was my birthday, preparing to spend a full day at work. Thanks, JP! This book redeems your taste for recommending Richard Carrier.

14. Audrey Niffenegger - The Time Traveler's Wife. I didn't find out until after I finished this book that I was supposed to not like it, and dismiss it as light, People Magazine reader style, trash. Sorry folks, I loved it. Thanks, JG.

15. Kiran Desai - The Inheritance of Loss. Did it deserve to win the Booker Prize? Probably not. Did I like it? Mostly.

16. P.G. Wodehouse - Jeeves and the Feudal Spirit. [info]fauxarbres tried to discourage the fascination I have with my own occasional mustache by delivering me this terrifically amusing book. You were unsuccessful in doing so, but I loved the book. And I do miss you too around here.

17. Evelyn Waugh - Brideshead Revisited. Good idea to read a book about debauchery and Catholicism during the most debaucherous weekend of 2007? Sure, why not?

18. W. Somerset Maugham - The Painted Veil. Good idea to read a book about cholera in China while sincerely believing that I had just had a "transient ischemic attack"? Sure, why not?

19. Charles Bukowski - Factotum. Oh to be an alcoholic in Los Angeles in the 1940s! Oh the disgusting and wonderful opportunities I missed out on!

20. David Quammen - Monster of God: The Man Eating Predator in the Jungles of History and the Mind. A bit light, but totally kickass. Especially the story about the chick who was canoeing and got rolled by a crocodile and survived to tell the tale. Missable, yet awesome. Thanks, JC!

21. Michael Chabon - The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. A bit saccarine, and too long for what it was, and the second half sagged, but I liked it more than I hated it.

22. William S. Burroughs - The Wild Boys. I read this around Thanksgivingtime, in order to clear my mind of the deadness that working brings. I still maintain that if you want to read Burroughs you should stick with Ticket That Exploded, Naked Lunch and Junky, but if there is anything redeeming about 200+ pages of graphic descriptions of male on male anal sex, I suppose this book was very redeeming. Someday, when I get the nerve to sing the Duran Duran song at karaoke, I'll have this thoroughly disgusting book in mind.

23. Jim Thompson - Pop. 1280. Funny, moralizing in a great way, perfect. Highly, highly recommended.

24. Kinglsey Amis - Lucky Jim. I'm not done yet with this one, but am optimistic that I'll finish before the new year. Maybe a bit like Jane Austen, but written from a male perspective. Hilarious and very insightful.

How am I gonna get through?
Tonight I sang (I still do this, just not as often):

The Pet Shop Boys - What Have I Done to Deserve This?

and

Evanescence - Bring me to Life.

The latter turned out to be extremely fun to sing. I'm going to totally do it again.

The Pity Party Interview
As you all know, my friend Joe runs a website called Radio Free Silverlake. It concerns itself mostly with the local music scene in Los Angeles (and occasionally Fresno) and features reviews, recommendations for upcoming shows, a concert calendar, free downloads and band interviews.

A few weeks ago, while sitting by the pool at the Standard Hotel, laptop on lap, I conducted an interview by email with local band The Pity Party for the site. Here it is.

i love how the garden grows and i love the garden rose
Yesterday:

1. I ordained myself as a minister of the Universal Life Church in anticipation of my friend's wedding. Does anyone know if there's anything ELSE that I need to do in preparation in order to properly solemnize the wedding, as planned?

2. I am going to quit my gym. After working in the office til 7, I wasn't able to get to the gym until 7:30 and discovered that on Saturday it CLOSES at 8. EIGHT? TEN on the weekdays, which is itself pretty poor. And 3 of the treadmills were broken. And I pay 120 bucks a month to go there. I'm quitting and joining one of those other gyms. Besides, I hardly have time to go more than once a week (usually less) so what's the point.

3. Saw the Long Blondes perform last night. Oooh la la. I like. You should too.

4. I'm seeing Lavender Diamond perform tonight. If you aren't there, you are going to regret it. Just like the time you didn't come with me to see the Decemberists play at Spaceland. Or the time you didn't come with me to see them at the Troubadour. Because you thought they sounded too much like They Might Be Giants.

5. Went to Spaceland on Monday for the first time in months to see Brothers and Sisters. Remember when I used to go all the time? I guess they don't pay me the big bucks to stay on top of the local music scene!

6. Was a guest on KXLU's Demolisten yesterday. You can listen to the show here.

7. Got rear ended on the freeway yesterday. I'm not hurt, and my car is only mildly hurt. After the hit and run, I drank a bottle of wine.

oh no!
I haven't read my livejournal in about a month now. I just skimmed through about half of what i missed, but it seems like everybody's get sick or married or hates stuff or did it with somebody exciting or saw a show that I missed or enjoyed their summer or did something to their house or pet.

I wasn't able to meaningfully sort through all of it.

So, if there's anything in there that I really should know about (as I do care about all of you, and deeply) that took place in the last month, could you possibly leave me maybe 2-3 lines in the comments summarizing it? Just so I'll be able to pick up the story when I start reading regularly again?

Thanks.

My weekend in Coachella
None of you care about what I did at Coachella, do you? I mean, the fact remains that something like a million (or a 100,000) people were there for those three days, including more music reviewers than I have the patience to link to. Who cares what I, some poseur hack from the west side of LA says? Who cares what some sell-out, extremely junior lawyer says about Lilly Allen? Who fucking cares about HOW MUCH FUN I HAD, HOW I FINALLY SAW BJORK AFTER WANTING TO SEE HER FOR NINE YEARS, HOW I PUSHED MY BODY, MIND AND SOUL TO MY PERSONAL LIMIT AND HOW I AM FILLED WITH YET ANOTHER RESULTING WAVE OF NOSTALGIA, FEAR AND JOY?

I know you don't. I know everybody else doesn't. I'm not even sure I do.

But gosh, gosh, gosh, it was amazing. Unlike [info]claudelemonde, I did NOT do Coachella celebrity/fancy style. I was invited to (or for that matter aware of) ZERO parties, had no passes to anything, and had no group to hang with. Despite being a semi "old guy" for Coachella (26), I did everything the hard way. Pushed through crowds, waited in long lines, stayed far away in a dumpy hotel, got sweated on, sweated on others, and got my wallet stolen in the Rage Against the Machine mosh pit. I didn't meet anyone I expect to stay in touch with. I didn't look good. And I didn't really take any special pictures.

What I did do was see so many amazing bands, dance my head off, cook in the sun (which I actually love) without getting as much as a tan and drink a tremendous amount of water, beer, gatorade and water without almost ever peeing.

So how to organize this?

Best Show

Bjork. Possibly the best performance I've ever seen. Now, I've been to Iceland AND seen Bjork perform. Two fantasies from my freshman year of college fulfilled. What to live for now?

Most insane/ridiculous experience

Rage Against the Machine. I don't even LIKE Rage. I wouldn't normally pay 5 bucks to see them. But late Sunday night, I knew, deep in my heart, that i'd regret it if I didn't not only see them, but get as deep as I could into the mosh pit. I ended up pretty close. I got kicked in the head, my wallet pulled out of my messanger bag, got covered in sweat and dirt, got pushed, almost knocked over, almost had my glasses knocked off and pulverized. But I survived. Sore. Dazed. And drove home.

Who did I see?

Friday: Amy Winehouse, Silversun Pickups, Felix Da Housecat, Of Montreal, Peaches, Arctic Monkeys, Jesus and Mary Chain, Interpol, Bjork

Saturday: Roky Erickson, CocoRosie, Fratellis, Girl Talk, !!!, Peter Bjorn and John, LCD Soundsystem, New Pornographers, The Rapture, Hot Chip, Steve Aoki

Sunday: Grizzley Bear, Tapes N' Tapes, Lily Allen, The Roots, Kaiser Chiefs, Placebo, Manu Chao, Air, Rage Against the Machine.

Some of these bands I saw the whole set, some just a song or two. I'm sure you don't care that I don't specify which is which.

Pictures?

Me in the Heineken tent with F, J, C (my Coachella roommate) and J)

Me enjoying beer instead of water (resulting in semi-severe dehydration later that evening)

My willingness to post pictures like this demonstrates that deep down I'd rather be "funny" than "good looking"

For some reason, almost no one I know has heard of the DJ known as Girl Talk. Here's the stage during his performance.

For the first time in my life, I used diabetes as a lie/excuse to bring alcohol (rum and coke) into an event

My Coachella roommate punched me iin the face, more than once

People got rowdy during the Kaiser Chiefs

Lilly Allen is trendy to like, but also super good.

People got REALLY rowdy during Rage Against the Machine

Duke Five Year Reunion
Oh you want to hear about reunion, don't you? I have decided (oh so very graciously) to tell you all about it, even though i'd rather be in bed reading and falling asleep. To summarize: My college five year reunion was AMAZING. If any of you are considering going to yours (or any later reunions, for that matter), I HIGHLY recommend going. Any time you combine 1) people you know, 2) but aren't sick of, 3) with little prospect of seeing again the near future and 4) a touch of nostalgic surroundings and 5) a nearly unlimited suppy of free beer and wine, a good time is almost impossible to thwart.

And despite posting about all the "fun" I have here in boring, boring LA, the reality is: I HAVE NOT HAD AS MUCH FUN AS I HAD THIS WEEKEND IN SEVERAL YEARS.

I didn't even LIKE Duke that much, for at least most of it. And the people I hung out with most at Duke DIDN'T EVEN SHOW UP. So what happened?

Thursday Night

I touchdown at RDU, exhausted, nervous as hell, beaten down, and an hour late. At 1:30 a.m.

But things start smoothly. My rental car was upgraded from piece of crap tiny thing to Chevy Impala (for the same super cheap price), and my trip to Carrboro (Carrboro! When was the last time I said THAT word!) went smoothly.

And who did I visit, most unlikely of unlikelies? [info]bondagebunni! I've been instant messaging with her for something like 5 or 6 years, but this was our first time meeting. We drove to Harris Teeter for some late night snacks (sausages wrapped in pancake, huh?), took a look at the bunnies and "caught up." Honestly, at this point I was already elated. I was in NC, and I was sleeping on a couch. Have I ever told any of you how much I love sleeping on couches? I've loved it ever since early college when i had my OWN couch. I think it symbolizes something wonderful, although I can't put my finger on it.

Friday

Popped up at 10 or so, after having gone to bed at 4 or so. Have I mentioned also that I get a real kick out of sleeping in my clothes? Yes I do! I thanked H for everything and hurried off into the beautiful North Carolina world!

Wandered around Franklin Street!

Visited Schoolkids Records and bought 4 CD's to enjoy during my trip: Peter Bjorn and John - Writer's Block, Lavender Diamond - Cavalry of Light, The Pipettes - Judy (single) and Marnie Stern - In Advance of the Broken Arm.

Coffee at Caribou!

My eyes are just popping out of my head at this point!

Checked into my hotel!!!!!!

Took a shower! (at this point I'm almost shaking with anticipation!)

And off I was to campus!

Got my nametag, joked with the students, checked out section (no one remembered me), had lunch with Dan L. at Cosmic Cantina (the first of three times I ate Cosmic over one weekend).

Back to campus, saw Pauly, of Pauly Dogs, WHO STILL REMEMBERED ME!
Look at the awesome dorky name tag I wore all weekend!

Ran into a creepy grad student (still there!) who was obsessed with ex-girlfriend A and 2 friends of hers, who appears to still be obsessed with them. Was rescued from conversation with him by Gwen -- definitely hadn't spoken to her since graduation, and probably not for a while before that. Joined her and Reggie for free beer outside Cameron indoor (much of my weekend could be described this way.)

Recalled a party thrown by Reggie in 2001, to which I had been dragged by Sarah R. after she found me passed out on the floor of my dorm room.

Gwen and I buy something or another in the LOBBY SHOP, and on the quad run tinto Mike R. and Venu. We walk with them to the West-Edens Link to finish the beers we had been working on and chat about law school and shrimp boats.

Return to the beer tents near Cameron, where I sit until about 7. I hardly remember who I talked to, but I know Jim A. was one of them. I think I might have been a little bit loopy at this point.

But not too loopy to go to the Class of '02 party held in Cameron. Oh boy, was everybody married and engaged or were they!

One of the first people I ran into was [info]calltheday, who I ended up seeing quite a bit of over the next day and a half.

And not so much later, I saw L, who also made an unexpected number of appearances during the weekend.

This is much harder, by the way, than it looks. Especially after 3 glasses of cheap wine.

Here's a picture of me, [info]calltheday, [info]trillian42 and a girl I don't know, but who also has Livejournal, attempting to make the letters "LJ" with our fingers. This was, of course, my idea. NERDS.

I get very affectionate when I drink:

The funny thing about this event was that nobody danced. I didn't exactly mind, because I had so much fun talking to people, but still, I also wouldn't have minded a little bit of dancing.

I somehow ended up in a cab, back to Cosmic Cantina, where I scarfed down a burrito with a group of guy friends. I'm not sure how I ended up with them. Nor do I really remember who drove me back to Campus -- no wait, I do! I was stuffed into a car full of about 7 or 8 dudes. And then I drove back to the hotel! Gosh, whatever happened to my good judgment!

I'm leaving some things out of this synopsis.

Saturday

UGH...is obviously how I felt when I woke. But I recovered relatively quickly. Actually, despite very little sleep and a tremendous amount to drink, I was rarely tired, and only minorly hungover. Oh the wonders of not having to be at work!

Drove over to [info]calltheday's hotel. Picked up her and E for lunch at Foster's. Bought a Pez dispenser, and without ease loaded it with candy.

Back to campus for more free beer with guys from my dorm that I rarely talked to in college.

And back for more fun and games with L, K and E, along with a few others. I remember laughing super hard about something or another, but can't remember much. Maybe something about a Teddy Bear? Maybe something about a rivet on my jeans?

Dinner at Bullocks with fraternity guys (yes, believe it friends! I was in a fraternity!) And I love North Carolina BBQ. What I do NOT love, is the way North Carolina BBQ feels in my gut the next day...
Here's a picture of me with a gut full of pork.

Back to hotel, changed into nicer clothes and took a cab with Eric B. to...

THE REUNION GALA!

I'll say even less about this. There was dancing. There was a band. There were a lot of people. I definitely got kind of wild. Covered in rain and sweat. Absolutely amazing.

People liked the pez dispenser.

Per Trillian42's request:

About 10 minutes before the venue closed, I panicked and started taking pictures with everybody I recognized. In each picture, I looked virtually identical. For example:

I ended up being among the very last 3 at the event. By 2 or so, everyone had cleared out.

Sunday

I woke up feeling very, very depressed. And somewhat sick to my stomach. But happy with the weekend...which wasn't quite over.

Drove back to Chapel Hill and had lunch at Spanky's with [info]merseygirl, whom I hadn't seen in 4 years. And then a drink at Top of the Hill. We even talked to A on the phone, all the way from Providence.

If you want to see ALL of the pictures, they are here (all 135 of them): http://www.flickr.com/photos/21044291@N00/sets/72157600081557327/

Gosh I'm depressed to be back. This trip wasn't anything like college, because it was so much more fun and so much less stressful.

Why bother?
I'm going to my college reunion on Friday through Sunday. If you are in Durham that weekend, and look around, you'll see me.

But today I'm going to work.

I've done almost nothing to prepare for 3 days of seeing people I haven't seen (with almost no exceptions) in 5 years.

weekend update -- has my "blogging" lost all purpose after all?
Really, I'd love to give you all an update about all the things that "happened" this weekend, but the fact is, this weekend was more about nothing happening at all than anything.

Sitting at a wine bar and reading on friday night.

Sleeping on a hard wood floor and freezing.

Sitting at a cafe all day on Saturday.

Finally finishing a book I couldn't have liked less.

Working out twice, hurting my feet in the process.

Drinking a pitcher of sangria with two friends in West Hollywood, and pissing them off with my complaining.

Going to a party where I knew almost nobody besides the host, who despite historically having been one of my better friends, now feels like little more than a stranger.

Oil change. Car wash.

I spent today mostly in silverlake and then again in west hollywood drinking absinthe, wine and even a little bit of moonshine.

Went to karaoke for the first time in forever. Sang Yeah Yeah Yeah's "Maps" and Benatar's "We Belong" as duet with friend E, who will be leaving LA for good in a few weeks.

You're a wolf boy, get out of this town
Do any of you still care about me at all anymore? Let me tell you then:

1. Is there not something tragic about the fact that the job I have is actually somewhat enviable?

2. Because unlike my semi-friend P* in NYC, rather than getting out of work at 1 or midnight, I got out of work at 8:30.

3. And saw Sea Wolf and the Little Ones at the Troubadour. I love the Troubadour. And I really like both bands. Both will likely become big. Mark my words.

Joshua Tree
I first visited Joshua Tree, out in the California desert, 30 or 40 miles off the 10 freeway, in March of 2005. At the time, I was near the peak of physical fitness, listening to Man Man on repeat. Desperately grasping at the last days of law school, before studying for the bar (and then working) began.

I returned again a few months later in May, after having graduated from law school.

I went back yesterday with two friends. It was beautiful just as I had remembered it, the sky much bluer during the day than it ever is out here, and much blacker at night. I climbed over rocks, sat in the dirt, wandered out among the cactuses.

Leaned against the car as the sun set, eating grapes and beef jerky, listening to the Finches.

Thinking about Pee Wee's Big Adventure....

This is the kind of thing I actually really like to do.

The 29th of March it rained. Remember?
THE REASON I HAVEN'T UPDATED IN A WHILE IS THAT I HAVEN'T HAD INTERNET AT HOME.

I really, really, really don't like to update from work, but I'm doing it anyway. I TOTALLY TOTALLY TOTALLY am going to get back on the internet, eventually, I promise.

How's life been?

Sucky. Working too much.  But isn't that everybody's life?

C-YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!

We come from orange county, we got a lot of money
On Thursday night, against my better judgment, I drove out to the Smell to see the Paris Hilton Motherfuckers (Prs Hltn Mthrfckrs).

Check it out, yo:

But who are they?

A coupe of (approximately) 17 year olds from Orange County who perform in bathing suits, and sing/rap some VERY sexual electroclashy songs. Their recordings are good, but their live performances are really something else. I'm glad the youth of southern California are doing something useful with themselves.

Oh, you want to see video? Here you go!
